Biography
“As soon as I worked on my first still-life shoot, I knew it was the direction I wanted to pursue. For me, researching, collecting and arranging is a joy.”
Having spent the majority of her twenties travelling, Annette Masterman worked as a proof-reader for an English newspaper in Tokyo, managed a jewellery showroom in New York and even completed a stint working in finance in London before she finally began on the path that led to finding her professional calling – but now, neatly ensconced in her studio in Hackney, she feels that “all the travel and the different cultural experiences have really added to what I can bring to a shoot.”
Describing herself as “a bit of a magpie”, rummaging around antique markets, no matter where in the world, “has always been a passionate pastime of mine. I’m a bit of a hoarder,” she goes on, gesturing at the collection of objects which decorate the walls of her work space. “I will develop an obsession for a certain type of Victorian glass jar or tin, and then I’ll start seeing them everywhere. I love anything with a story and a bit of heritage to it.”
